True Detective Season 5 Adds Antonio Banderas to Lead Cast

Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas will lead True Detective season 5, which moves the HBO anthology drama to Jamaica Bay, New York. Production is scheduled to begin in 2027, with Cage playing Henry Logan and Banderas portraying Rai Garcia.

HBO has confirmed the new leads, while details of the case and the season’s plot remain under wraps. Issa López, who oversaw the previous installment, returns as showrunner.

A new place, two new characters.

True Detective season 5 moves to Jamaica Bay

The setting changes from Alaska, where López’s fourth season, True Detective: Night Country, followed characters played by Jodie Foster and Kali Reis. The move to Jamaica Bay gives the next installment a different location, but HBO has not yet described the investigation or explained how Logan and Rai become involved.

Deadline reported Banderas’s casting after Cage confirmed his involvement at New York Comic-Con. Cage had been reported to be in talks for the role more than a year earlier. AS also reported that HBO confirmed both actors as the season’s leads.

The series has used a different cast and location for each installment. That anthology format means the new season can introduce its own central characters without continuing the previous season’s main investigation. For viewers, the confirmed names and setting are the first firm details about what comes next; the story itself remains undisclosed.

Issa López returns as showrunner

López will write, direct and executive produce season 5. Her return follows Night Country, which was set in Alaska. HBO’s Head of Drama Series Francesca Orsi previously said, “Issa has a lot to say, not unlike she did with Night Country. It’s a different milieu but just as powerful.”

López has also said the new season will connect in some way to the events in Alaska, while standing as a new story with new characters. She told the New York Post that there would be “important connections” between what happened there and the new season. The reports have not detailed what those links will involve.

The executive producer credits reported include Cage, Banderas, López, Daniel Zelman, Mari Jo Winkler, Kathleen McCaffrey, Steve Golin, Richard Brown, Nic Pizzolatto, Cary Joji Fukunaga, Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey. HBO has not announced a release date.

Production is set to start in 2027.
