Police in North Wales say the body of a newborn baby girl found on a shoreline in Bangor may have been in the water for up to a few weeks. The infant was discovered by a member of the public on Sunday near Siliwen Road, beside the Menai Strait.
North Wales Police said a post-mortem examination has confirmed the baby was a girl. Officers are still trying to trace her mother and have renewed their appeal for her to come forward.
Appeal to the mother
Supt Llinos Davies said police understand the mother may be frightened about making contact, but urged her to speak to officers. “Her welfare and safety are our utmost concern,” she said.
Davies also asked anyone who is worried about a girl or woman who may have been pregnant in recent months, or whose behaviour has changed sharply, to get in touch. She mentioned people who may have withdrawn from friends, family or social ties.
“All names received will be treated with the utmost discretion,” she said, adding that police can rule out potential matches quickly.
Search widens on the shoreline
Police said further tests are under way to establish more about the baby. Officers are also looking at water currents and have been consulting oceanographers, according to reports, as they try to work out where the infant may have entered the water.
House-to-house enquiries are continuing in the Bangor area. The investigation remains focused on finding the child’s mother and piecing together what happened in the days before the discovery.
The case has drawn attention in Wales and beyond, not least because the initial indications suggest the body may have been in the water for weeks before it was found. Police say the next lead may come from someone close to the woman they are seeking.
