McDonald's mother, Lisa Kirton, remembered her daughter as someone with an unshakeable warmth. "A beautiful soul who would have done anything for anybody," Kirton said, describing her as "lovely, bright and bubbly" — the kind of person everyone gravitated toward.
Young Valentina had been visiting for summer holidays. "She was a cute little kid," Kirton said, her voice catching. "I can't believe it, seven years old. It's just a disgrace."
The tragedy unfolded with terrifying speed. McDonald's 15-year-old daughter and a friend managed to escape through an upstairs window. The friend's quick action — kicking out the glass — likely saved both their lives.
Unexplained Circumstances
The fire occurred less than a mile from the A66 crash site, where a collision on Saturday killed seven people including two police officers. Investigators have not ruled out connections between the two incidents or ties to criminal networks in the region, though details remain under wraps as the inquiry deepens.
A 20-year-old neighbor described how residents rushed to help occupants escape the spreading flames, though rescue attempts could not reach everyone inside the burning structure.
