The administration announced the suspensions on a Thursday, sending concern through the technology industry. Attorneys said that workers at the named companies should clarify how the action applies to their cases rather than assume the same outcome for everyone.
Workers urged to check their individual status
“This is a time where immigrants, high-skilled immigrants, really need to pay attention to laws,” Tahmina Watson, a business immigration attorney in Seattle, said. “Things are changing on a dime.”
Watson and seven other immigration attorneys spoke with the publication after the announcement. They discussed the suspensions in general terms, without reviewing specific workers’ records or immigration status. Some expected the action to face legal challenges; others described it as part of a broader series of changes to U.S. immigration measures.
The immediate advice is practical: consult an immigration lawyer and establish what the suspension means for a particular case. Workers should not assume that a company-wide announcement automatically determines their individual options.
Why the distinction matters
Green card cases can involve different processes and facts, so broad headlines may not answer what happens to a specific worker. Separate guidance from immigration lawyers on other recent policy changes has also warned applicants against making major decisions based on alarmed interpretations of announcements alone.
The suspension centers on a federal sponsorship program, while employees’ personal immigration circumstances vary. That is why attorneys stressed case-by-case advice rather than offering a single prediction for Microsoft, Adobe or workers at other named technology companies.
Watson’s warning was blunt: immigration rules are changing quickly. Eight attorneys interviewed said workers should get counsel and clarity on their status.
