ChatGPT can now deliver more than text answers in a conversation. OpenAI has introduced Intelligent UI, an interactive visual interface that arrives with the GPT-6 model and is designed to help users understand complex topics.

The change brings diagrams, editable charts, tappable buttons and custom calculators for specific tasks into ChatGPT. The feature launched globally with GPT-6 for Pro, Plus, Business and Enterprise users; free and Go users get it on Thursday.

The visuals can be touched and changed. OpenAI says users can interact directly with a number of elements, rather than simply looking at static images between the chatbot’s replies.

OpenAI says the main goal of Intelligent UI is to make learning complex topics easier. In a demonstration for journalists, company staff showed the chatbot creating diagrams and visuals to explain abstract ideas.

ChatGPT for learning and everyday tasks

Aarush Selvan, a product manager at OpenAI, said ChatGPT has mainly used a text-based interface. The company wants to help people get a range of things done, from planning a recipe or a trip to studying, with answers that are not always just text.

“the most helpful answers aren’t just text,” Selvan said as he explained the approach.

He gave the example of a student who wants to understand how an airplane wing works. Selvan asked ChatGPT to “explore how an airplane wing generates lift”. The chatbot then created several diagrams designed to show how a plane stays in the air.

Other examples OpenAI showed include visuals for a recipe, a diagram explaining how a bicycle works, a map for a multi-day hiking trip, and a personal savings calculator. The form of the visual can be adapted to the task at hand.

For users, the change means a conversation can contain material that can be used immediately to understand or do something. Someone learning an abstract concept can see a diagram, while a user with a practical need can use a custom calculator or map. OpenAI did not say that every answer will always use a visual format.

Users can reduce visuals

OpenAI says Intelligent UI can be adjusted. Users who do not want many visuals in responses can reduce them, so the interface does not have to be filled with diagrams or interactive elements.

The feature follows the launch of GPT-6. Pro, Plus, Business and Enterprise users got access globally alongside the model, while free and Go users follow on Thursday, according to OpenAI’s statement as cited.

In the examples the company showed, ChatGPT created a diagram of an airplane wing, a recipe visual, a bicycle mechanism, a map for a multi-day hiking trip and a personal savings calculator.
