Europe’s mainstream leaders are reacting with alarm after Germany’s far-right Alternative für Deutschland won a historic state election in Saxony-Anhalt on Sunday, putting the party within reach of power at state level for the first time since World War Two. The AfD fell just short of an absolute majority, but the result still sent a jolt through capitals watching the rise of nationalist politics.
The victory gave nationalist figures a fresh talking point. For opponents, it landed like a warning shot.

Exit polls showed the AfD surging into first place in the eastern German state, a result that mainstream politicians across Europe quickly cast as more than a local contest. France’s finance minister, Roland Lescure, struck a similarly sharp note, saying the result sent “a very, very worrying signal.” He added that Europe faces a major challenge from a populist wave spreading around the world and that it must resist it.

The reaction reflects a broader fear among centrist and left-leaning leaders that far-right gains in one country can quickly echo elsewhere, especially when anti-establishment parties frame local victories as proof of momentum.
