A breakthrough in a Republican stronghold
Democrats and supporters watched the results unfold in Austin with disbelief. Tiffany Dunsmore, 44, who owns Austin Scavenger Hunt, said the outcome felt hard to imagine as the city’s skyline shone behind the gathering.
“I cannot believe Texas went blue!” she said.
The mood at the Long Center for the Performing Arts took on the feel of a political festival, with taco trucks and craft stalls filling the plaza as large screens showed Democratic gains across the country. The Texas results stood out: Talarico won a Senate seat, and Hinojosa denied Greg Abbott a fourth term to become the state’s first Latina leader.
It was a sweeping change. Texas had gone without a statewide Democratic win for more than three decades; now the party had captured both the Senate contest and the governor’s office. The results also contributed to Democrats’ new congressional majority, alongside gains in states including Georgia, Kansas, Ohio and Michigan.
Talarico’s message after the win
Talarico framed his victory as a rebuke to the influence of wealthy donors. Elon Musk donated about $224 million to political action committees supporting Senate Republicans, with funds directed to Paxton’s campaign in Texas.
Speaking after his victory, Talarico said the result showed that political power remained with voters. He called it “a win the size of Texas” and argued the outcome gave Democrats a mandate to curb big-money influence in politics.
The election reshapes the national map and puts Texas at the center of a changed balance in Washington. For the state’s next contests, the immediate question is whether Democrats can build on this statewide breakthrough. As Talarico put it: “Texas is not for sale.”
