Russell Brand Accusers Haunted for Years, Prosecutor Tells Jury

Russell Brand has arrived at London’s Southwark Crown Court as his criminal trial begins, bringing charges of rape and sexual assault before a jury. The former actor and comedian has pleaded not guilty to all charges; the proceedings could last up to two months.

Brand faces three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault. The Crown Prosecution Service brought charges in April and December last year, following an investigation by the Metropolitan Police.

Jury selection is expected to occupy the opening day. Opening arguments from the prosecution and defense are tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, Variety reported.

Charges involve six women

The charges brought in April are said to relate to four women and alleged incidents between 1999 and 2005. The additional charges brought in December concern two further women and are said to relate to 2009.

Brand arrived at court on Monday wearing a grey suit and sunglasses, accompanied by his wife, Laura Gallacher. The trial’s outcome will be decided by 12 jurors. Brand is on bail throughout the proceedings.

The charges followed a police investigation launched after allegations were published in a joint investigation by The Sunday Times of London and Channel 4 documentary “Dispatches” in 2023. The reporting included allegations of rape, sexual assault and emotional abuse. Brand strongly denied the allegations.

Jaswant Narwal, the CPS’s chief crown prosecutor, said when the first charges were brought: “We carefully reviewed the evidence after a police investigation into allegations made following the broadcast of a Channel 4, Sunday Times and Times investigation in September 2023.”

She added: “We have concluded that Russell Brand should be charged with offences including rape, sexual assault and indecent assault.”

Fair-trial warning as proceedings begin

The Crown Prosecution Service also issued a reminder that the case is active and that Brand has the right to a fair trial. The warning reflects the legal status of the proceedings: the charges are allegations, and the jury will decide the outcome.

That distinction matters beyond the courtroom. Reporting on an active criminal case must not treat charges as proof, while the trial will determine the allegations through evidence presented to jurors. The CPS said: “The Crown Prosecution Service reminds everyone that criminal proceedings are active, and the defendant has the right to a fair trial.”

Brand was widely known in the mid-2000s as a comedian and actor. He presented shows including “Big Brother’s Big Mouth” and appeared in films including “Get Him to the Greek” and “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.” He later moved into podcasting and online influencing.

The trial could last up to two months.
