6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Southwest Sumba, Indonesia
A magnitude 6.1 earthquake rocked Southwest Sumba in Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province, damaging homes and a school while injuring one resident.
TAMBOLAKA, Indonesia — A powerful 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Southwest Sumba region of East Nusa Tenggara on Sunday morning, October 4, 2026, causing widespread panic and damaging residential and educational infrastructure. The seismic event, recorded at 6:30 a.m. local time, forced residents to flee their homes as the tremors struck.
Structural Damage and Injuries Reported
Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) confirmed the damage and reports of minor injuries. Teguh Rahayu, the agency's Director of Engineering Seismology, stated that they are working closely with regional technical units and the local Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) to assess the impact. By 8:40 a.m. WIB, authorities confirmed that the tremors caused moderate structural damage in several areas, with one person reported to have sustained minor injuries.
The impact was most severe in the Pero Konda region of the Kodi district, where an Islamic elementary school and two residential homes sustained structural damage. The agency recorded the shaking intensity at levels IV to VI on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale, signifying tremors felt by nearly everyone, with some heavy furniture moved and minor wall cracks occurring.
Devastation in Weepangali Village
In the village of Weepangali, located within the Kota Tambolaka district, the destruction was more pronounced. Village Head Fransiskus Umbu Gete reported that 10 homes in the village’s second and fourth hamlets suffered heavy structural damage. While no fatalities were reported, the psychological toll remains significant.
"There were no casualties in my village, but 10 homes suffered heavy damage," said Fransiskus. He noted that the sudden, violent ground motion triggered a sense of urgency among villagers, many of whom remain traumatized by the history of major seismic activity in the region, specifically recalling the impact of previous earthquakes in Flores.
Official Safety Precautions
BMKG officials continue to monitor the area for potential aftershocks. Ardhasena Sopaheluwakan, Deputy for Climatology at the BMKG, urged residents to prioritize their safety by remaining outside of homes that show visible signs of cracking or structural failure.
"We advise the public to avoid buildings that have cracked or sustained damage from the earthquake," Sopaheluwakan stated. He also called on the public to remain calm and verify all information regarding the disaster through official government channels to prevent the spread of misinformation in the aftermath of the event.
