Tangerang Boosts Local Economy Through ‘Sport City’ Strategy

TANGERANG — City officials are transforming Tangerang into a sports hub as a strategic engine for local economic growth. Beyond the pursuit of athletic accolades, the city is betting on the influx of athletes, officials, and spectators to revitalize local businesses, particularly in the hospitality and food service sectors.

The city's strategy centers on the 'Sport City' initiative, which aims to ensure that major tournaments translate into tangible revenue for local hotels, transportation services, and small to medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). By hosting more than 25 sporting events throughout the year, ranging from national competitions to international meets, the government intends to create a consistent pipeline of consumer demand.

Kaonang, Head of the Tangerang Youth and Sports Agency, highlighted the immediate ripple effects of these gatherings during a statement on Friday, Oct. 2, 2026. He pointed out that every large-scale event creates an instantaneous market for basic necessities.

"There is no tournament with a thousand participants that does not require food or drink. All MSMEs come to life. Sport provides an economic multiplier effect," said Kaonang.

The core objective is to shift the perception of sports from purely recreational to an integrated driver of commerce. City planners are explicitly calculating the economic benefits of each event, ensuring that the surge in activity benefits vendors surrounding the venues. According to the agency, the economic cycle is triggered the moment an event begins, as visitors require lodging, local transit, and daily dining.

This initiative represents a deliberate move to tether the sports calendar to the city's broader economic health. By maintaining a steady flow of events, Tangerang officials believe they can sustain business activity for local operators who rely on the high volume of foot traffic generated by tournament attendees. The focus remains on leveraging these events to keep the local economy moving, transforming playing fields into hubs of commercial activity.
