Indonesia Expedites $8.3M Aid for Over 44,000 Earthquake-Damaged Homes
Following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake in August, Indonesia’s disaster agency has begun distributing aid to over 44,767 damaged homes in East Nusa Tenggara.
MAUMERE — Indonesia’s national disaster mitigation agency is launching an emergency aid distribution program this October to support tens of thousands of families left homeless by a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck East Nusa Tenggara on Aug. 16, 2026. Official data from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) confirms 44,767 homes suffered significant structural damage during the disaster.
Lieutenant General Suharyanto, head of the BNPB, announced on Friday that the government has finalized its disbursement strategy to accelerate post-disaster recovery. The relief package includes provisions for temporary shelters, permanent housing construction, and direct cash stimulus grants for residents to repair damaged properties. The total budget allocated for temporary housing and monthly living stipends stands at approximately 136.27 billion Indonesian rupiah (roughly $8.36 million), intended to support 4,008 primary beneficiaries.
Under the established aid guidelines, homeowners receive tiered financial support based on the severity of the damage. Properties classified as "lightly damaged" are eligible for 15 million rupiah (approximately $920), while those with "moderate damage" qualify for 30 million rupiah (approximately $1,840). To ensure transparency, 75 percent of the funds are provided as a direct cash grant, with the remaining 25 percent released via a reimbursement scheme requiring proof of material purchases.
Rebuilding Progress and Housing Support
For displaced families whose homes were completely destroyed, the government is facilitating the construction of temporary living units (huntara) as a bridge toward long-term permanent housing (huntap). Residents who opt out of these temporary shelters are eligible for a monthly living allowance of 600,000 rupiah (roughly $37) for three months while awaiting permanent relocation.
As of late September, construction efforts are underway across the region. BNPB records indicate 124 temporary units are already complete, while 861 units remain in early construction phases, and an additional 117 units have reached over 50 percent completion. The remaining 299 units are currently in the site surveying and land preparation stage.
Flexibility for Self-Funded Repairs
Addressing concerns from residents who initiated home repairs independently before government assistance arrived, Suharyanto confirmed that early intervention would not disqualify them from aid. “Do not worry; if you have already started repairs, you can still apply for the stimulus funds. The claims will be verified based on standard procedures and processed through the reimbursement system,” Suharyanto stated.
The push for recovery follows the formal conclusion of the emergency response phase in the regencies of Manggarai, East Manggarai, and Nagekeo on Sept. 28, 2026. With the transition to the recovery phase, the focus has shifted entirely toward restoring housing stability for affected communities before the end of the month.
