Indonesia Charges Two Over Illegal Wildfire in Jambi Protected Forest
Authorities in Indonesia have named two suspects in a Jambi forest arson case following a blaze within a protected concession area.
JAMBI, Indonesia — Authorities have formally charged two residents in West Tanjung Jabung Regency, Jambi, for allegedly setting fires to clear land and occupying protected forest territory illegally. The Ministry of Forestry confirmed the move on Monday, Sept. 7, 2026, marking a critical step in the government's ongoing crackdown against illegal encroachment in Sumatra's vital forest ecosystems.
The Incident
The blaze erupted at approximately 12:10 p.m. local time (WIB) on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2026. The fire occurred within the protected Forest Management Unit (HPT) of Lubuk Bernai village, located in the Batang Asam district. The site sits squarely within the operational concession area held by PT Rimba Hutani Mas, specifically in Block III of the Taman Raja zone.
"We must trace the source of every fire, especially when there are clear indications of illegal activity," said Hari Novianto, head of the Sumatran Forestry Law Enforcement Agency, during a press briefing in Jambi City. "Forest areas must be shielded from unauthorized activities that threaten both our environment and the public safety from disaster risks."
Discovery and Arrest
The investigation began after a joint task force consisting of Jambi’s Forest and Land Fire Control team and employees from PT Rimba Hutani Mas responded to an initial wildfire in the Taman Raja area. While conducting suppression operations, the teams observed additional smoke plumes rising from a nearby section of the forest.
Acting on the intelligence, the company’s security unit, supported by military personnel under the BKO (Bawah Kendali Operasi) command, conducted a sweep of the location. There, they apprehended the two suspects, identified by initials MTN and AK, as they were allegedly in the process of clearing forest land through fire.
Seized Evidence and Enforcement
Following the arrests, authorities cataloged a range of items found at the site as evidence. The inventory includes gas lighters, charred wood remnants, machetes, saws, solar-powered devices, tarpaulins, motorcycles, rubber boots, nails, and rattan baskets. These items point to a coordinated attempt to establish a semi-permanent camp within the protected area.
The Ministry of Forestry is currently reviewing the role of PT Rimba Hutani Mas to assess whether the license holder adequately fulfilled its obligations regarding fire prevention and suppression. This case underscores the government's intensified stance on environmental accountability. By coordinating across fire control teams, private concession holders, and military support, authorities aim to dismantle illegal settlement patterns that frequently trigger destructive forest fires across the Indonesian archipelago.
