WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump showed reporters a new helipad on the White House South Lawn on Wednesday, turning a construction update into a broader display of his remaking of the executive mansion. The landing pad, topped with granite flooring, is meant to solve a practical problem: newer helicopters’ powerful engines have been tearing up the turf.

Trump guided journalists through the grounds and praised the crews behind the work, calling attention to the craftsmanship behind the project. The White House has been undergoing a run of visible changes since the start of Trump’s second term. Big changes. Fast ones.

A lawn built for newer helicopters

The president said the helipad was needed because the latest helicopters can no longer land on the grass without damage. Their engines kick up chunks of turf during landing, leaving the South Lawn battered. Older aircraft had been used in the meantime.

Photos from Tuesday showed Trump pointing to a piece of granite that will form part of the nearly completed pad. Some portions had recently been removed as the project was adjusted.

More than a helipad

The new landing area sits alongside a wider sweep of changes Trump has overseen at the White House, including the demolition of the East Wing, plans for a large ballroom and a more ornate Oval Office with gold decoration. The president has repeatedly showcased the work as a sign of his personal stamp on the residence.

On his latest tour, Trump also presented the helipad itself as something to admire, not just use. He praised the construction crew’s artistry as he pointed out the granite finish and the structure’s place in the broader renovation effort.

The project has already drawn attention for the scale of the makeover and for the practical questions around helicopter access. Trump’s latest stop on the South Lawn made clear he intends to keep treating White House construction as part of the political show. “President of the United States signature design,” he said, describing the work in celebratory terms.
