A woman standing at the front door of her home was shot in the leg by police in suburban Cairns after officers opened fire on a man allegedly carrying knives next door. The incident happened on Saturday afternoon in Mount Sheridan, a busy residential area on the city’s southern edge.
The 50-year-old bystander was hit accidentally as police responded to what Queensland Police Service described as a dangerous confrontation at a neighbouring property. Police say threat levels were severe
Far Northern region Assistant Commissioner Graeme Paine said officers were dealing with an “extremely dangerous” incident that carried “very significant threat levels.” He said the street was busy with homes and traffic, adding that one of the bullets discharged from an officer’s firearm struck the woman in her lower leg.
“It’s the actions of the person at the time, and the level of threat, which then dictates the response by the officers,” Paine said. The remarks point to the split-second decisions officers had to make, and the risk that came with them. For the residents nearby, it was a sudden and frightening turn. For the woman at her doorway, it ended with a gunshot wound.
Paine said the situation was “very challenging and distressing.” That assessment will now sit alongside a formal review of the police response by Queensland Police Service Ethical Standards Command, which is examining what happened and how officers handled the confrontation.
Man faces court tomorrow
The man police say was armed with knives has been charged with multiple offences. Among them is attempted robbery, a serious charge that suggests investigators believe the confrontation went beyond a simple disturbance.
He is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court tomorrow. No further details about his alleged conduct were released in available reports, but the court appearance will likely bring the first public account of the allegations.
The shooting has drawn attention to how quickly routine suburban streets can become dangerous when weapons are involved. Mount Sheridan is not a remote outpost or a hardened crime scene.
